I am Tyler McHenry, a software engineer residing in southern California.

Nerdland is my personal website. It has been many things since it was first brought online in 1999. Historically, it has been an my experimentation ground for web development. These days, it is a place where I put records of my thoughts and activities, mostly related to my dual career-hobby of computer programming, and my interests in theoretical computer science. Nerdland is not strictly a weblog. Shorter comments and time-relevant materials are posted in weblog format, but Nerdland also serves as a collection of  standalone articles, which are permanently accessible through the links on the left.

I’ve been programming since I first copied a BASIC Pythagorean theorem solver out of my algebra textbook when I was twelve. My preferred language is C++, which I think is a great language to prefer, because you can work in it for years and still be learning new and interesting subtleties. I was once a Ph.D. student in Computer Science, concentrating my research on analysis of algorithms, but I left shortly after obtaining my Master’s degree, for want of more tangible, real-world engineering projects. In my spare time, I continue to read theory papers and dabble in analysis, the results of which contribute to the articles on this site.

When not sitting in front of a computer, I enjoy spending time with my wife, my books, and my cats. I enjoy cooking, reading, playing pool, and tending a small potted garden on my apartment’s patio. At one point I was a decent saxophonist, but I’m quite out of practice.
